Valve Maintenance Cheat Sheet

Water valves are an essential part of your community’s water distribution, and they can be tough to work with as there are many details and safety measures that must be followed to ensure success (and avoid disaster). This cheat sheet includes considerations and requirements to account for before, during, and after a water valve exercising.

Before Leaving the Office

Think about the location and environment of the water valve(s). Certain situations have certain requirements for the inspection or exercise to be safe and compliant. Here is a collection of situations to be aware of and some suggestions for handling them.

While Performing Maintenance

A loosened or over-tightened water valve will cause trouble, and will cost time, money, and customer satisfaction. Refer to this table to determine how many full 360-degree turns are required for a valve to be safe and secured. An exerciser (valve-turning) tool can make the job much easier by limiting the amount of torque on the valve when it is tightened.

Before Leaving the Site

Depending on the condition of the valve, it may require repair, replacement, or (non)-emergency maintenance. Below are descriptors to use when evaluating the condition of a water valve and can come in handy if a repair or work order is required.

Multi-Exercising Water Valves in AssetAlly

AssetAlly provides an easy-to-use tool to perform valve exercising on several water valves. To use this tool, start by selecting the Multi-Exercising tool under the Water Tools tab.

By drawing a polygon or rectangle select the valves to be exercised, and you are then prompted to enter the Date Exercised and the Worker(s) performing the exercise.

This process creates inspection records on each valve, which can then be viewed and edited in the asset dashboard to complete the valve exercising, record details and issues found on the valves, and, if necessary and depending on the nature of the issue, file a repair or work order.
